Meet the Intern: Noel Short

Prairie State is excited to welcome Noel Short as our Mine Operations Intern this summer.

Noel is originally from Florence, Kentucky. This fall, she will return to the University of Kentucky (UK) for her senior year studying mining engineering. Noel became interested in the field of mining engineering after attending an information session at her school. “The more I learned about mining, the more interesting I thought it was, and I decided that it was what I wanted to do.”

She is involved in Women in Mining (WIM), the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME), and the UK Mine Rescue Team. She is enthusiastic about theme parks and enjoys visiting different parks as often as possible.

Noel chose Prairie State after learning that the coal mine and power plant are on the same campus, which she believes is a unique opportunity. She’s looking forward to gaining experience this summer and learning as much as she can about mining.

While she is still completing her undergraduate studies, Noel has already started work on a master’s degree. After graduation, she plans to work in the mining field.
