Meet the Intern: Mary Kathryn Deister

Prairie State is excited to welcome Mary Kathryn Deister as our Mine Engineering Intern this summer.

Mary Kathryn is originally from Wildwood, Missouri. She will be a junior at Missouri S&T, where she is majoring in mining engineering. This major was her choice because it allows her to work underground and shatter rocks. “I like how essential the industry is to society. I also appreciate how creating a mine underground is like creating your very own city.”

At S&T, Mary Kathryn is involved with the soccer team, Women in Mining (WIM), and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME). She enjoys working out, being active, going on hikes, and being out on the lake in her free time.

Mary Kathryn chose Prairie State for the underground experience. She is eager to gain hands-on experience in this internship and apply what she has learned. She is looking forward to finishing her mining engineering degree with a minor in explosives engineering.
