Meet the Intern: Landon Florkowski

Prairie State is excited to welcome Landon Florkowski as our Mine Engineering Intern this summer.

Landon is originally from Robinson, Illinois. He is attending Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale, studying mechanical engineering. He said mechanical engineering interested him because of the diversity of the degree. “I really enjoy designing new things and will hopefully be able to use my degree to continue advancing the energy industry.”

Landon is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). A fun fact is that not only does he have a twin brother, but his younger brother and sister are also twins! He enjoys hunting, fishing and hanging out with his friends and family.

The past few summers, Landon has been working at the oilfield near his home, either on a rig or with equipment. He shared that the oilfield crosses over a lot with the coal industry as both provide power to people across the country.

Landon chose Prairie State because the company is a top leader in the industry. About his internship, he said, “This is a great opportunity for me and the other interns to learn valuable skills we can use in our careers. So far it has been a great place to work, with even better people to work with.”

This summer, Landon is looking forward to learning new things from his coworkers. In all of his past jobs, he has always tried to learn as much as possible. “At Prairie State I have been surrounded with some very smart and knowledgeable people so far. I look forward to learning from them the rest of the summer.”

Landon will return to SIU this fall to wrap up his senior year. After graduating with his mechanical engineering degree, his hope is to end up working near home, close to friends and family. His goal is to work somewhere he enjoys with one or two oil leases as side work.
