Following yesterday’s Illinois State Mine Rescue Competition, Prairie State’s Lively Grove Mine received an award for the for having the lowest incident rate for a Division I mine in the state of Illinois. The award was issued by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Office of Mines and Minerals for safety performance from July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018. Coal mines in Illinois are categorized into two groups: Division I and Division II mines. Division I mines have greater than 550,000 man-hours during this given time period, and Division II have less than 550,000 man-hours worked. Safety statistics from the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration are used to calculate the winner of this award.
