Meet the Intern: Sagar Kalauni

Prairie State is pleased to welcome Sagar Kalauni as the Analytics & Insights Intern this summer!

Sagar attends Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), where is working towards a Master’s in Statistics and post-baccalaureate degree in data science. He chose this field because he found that he enjoys unraveling the hidden story behind data. As a data analyst, Sagar can give data the ability to express that story, which he appreciates.

At SIUE, Sagar is an active student member of the American Statistical Society (ASA) and the Sagarmatha-Nepalese Student Association. He was formerly the President of the Mathematical Student Club at SNSC in Nepal. Being a first-generation college student, his journey from the western part of Nepal to the U.S. to earn a degree has made his family proud. Sagar enjoys family outings, gaming, traveling, and watching movies. Despite not being from India, he also knows a lot about different Indian music.

His internship at Prairie State will be Sagar’s first taste of working in the industry, an opportunity he is thankful for. Apart from his studies, Sagar has experience in content creation, producing videos showcasing the traditional music of Nepal’s far western region. Some of these videos have garnered millions of views on YouTube. He also runs a Facebook page with over 225,000 followers.

Sagar discovered Prairie State at an SIUE career fair; he saw the summer internship program as a great chance to gain hands-on experience with real-world data. He also drew a parallel between Prairie State’s mission and the mission of Nepal Electricity Authority, his father’s employer.

This summer, Sagar is eager to utilize his skills and knowledge of data to tackle challenges. He says, “I’m excited about gaining exposure to real-world data—understanding how it is generated and its impact on major decisions. I am excited to learn from industry professionals about how they handle and analyze data. I am sure this is going to be a big learning experience for me.”

This fall, Sagar will return to SIUE to complete his degree program. After that, he looks forward to finding work as a data analyst, helping a company solve complex problems and finding a solution to benefit the greater world population.
