Intern Update: Sagar Kalauni

Analytics & Insights Intern, Sagar Kalauni, has spent his summer developing dynamic dashboards to empower stakeholders in data-driven decision making.

Primarily, Sagar has focused these on inventory management, work order tracking, items tracking, and unit operational improvements. He has completed mine and plant inventory analysis, item count inventory analysis, unit shutdown dates analysis, repairable item track analysis, and finished/unfinished work order track analysis. He is currently focused on completing a slagging analysis project before the end of the summer.

During his internship, Sagar has had the opportunity to learn and grow in several impactful ways. As an international student, Sagar has appreciated the ability to learn about U.S. industrial work culture. He has also learned about adaptability, data analysis expressions language, power query m-language, Power BI context and data modeling, and Maximo. Overall, Sagar now feels well-prepared to contribute to the operational efficiency and data-driven decision-making processes which are crucial to an energy generation company.

Sagar has had a remarkably smooth experience filled with productive outcomes, learning, and personal growth. He says, “One of the most rewarding aspects of my time at Prairie State has been the opportunity to apply my academic knowledge in a practical, real-world context and observe its tangible impact. A particularly gratifying moment for me was receiving feedback from stakeholders after a presentation, where they highlighted how my work could enhance efficiency, save time and effort in their future endeavors, and promote systematic approaches. This moment was especially fulfilling, as it surpassed any similar experiences I’ve had with academic projects. Overall, I have found the supportive environment, engaging projects, and firsthand experience of project implementation to be exceptionally enriching and memorable aspects of my internship.”

This internship has solidified Sagar’s confidence in choosing his field to pursue a career as a data analyst. He thoroughly enjoys every aspect of his work, particularly the opportunity to give data the ability to tell its story, thereby aiding stakeholders in making informed decisions. He says, “This experience has shown me that I have a genuine passion for my field, and that I can look forward to a fulfilling and enjoyable career ahead. Moreover, the challenges and learning opportunities provided during this internship have further fueled my enthusiasm and commitment to excel in this profession.”

Sagar remains dedicated to advancing his career in data analytics, now with a specific interest in the energy industry. As he approaches the completion of his master’s degree, which will likely include a thesis focused on energy generation, he is eager to pursue a full-time position, which he hopes will be at Prairie State. The prospect of joining Prairie State excites him because its smaller analytics department promises greater visibility and recognition for his work. He says, “The supportive environment during my internship has significantly enhanced my understanding of data from energy industry. I am genuinely enthusiastic about the opportunity to contribute to Prairie State’s objectives and continue my professional growth within the energy industry.”
