Information Technology Intern, Colton Krebs, has spent his summer shadowing different positions in the IT department and providing desktop support.
Colton has answered helpdesk calls, traveled to the plant and mine to troubleshoot user issues, and helped update IT technology across campus. One notable project he has worked on includes the imagining, deployment, and maintenance of 52 personal computers for company use. As of late June, Colton has deployed 41 of these PCs. Many of these are unable to update to Windows 11, so they must be replaced. He expects to complete this project with time to spare, allowing him more time to shadow and learn from his colleagues.
During his internship, Colton gained extensive hands-on experience in network management, system administration, and desktop support. He provided technical support to employees that included resolving hardware and software issues. His role has involved collaborating with the IT team on various projects; these projects have enhanced his problem-solving and communication skills. In addition, Colton has assisted in managing databases, creating documentation, and implementing preventative measures, all of which he feels have significantly contributed to his professional growth in the IT field.
Colton has loved gaining hands-on experience in various IT roles. He says, “Assisting users and troubleshooting issues sharpened my problem-solving skills, while working with experienced professionals gave me invaluable insights into IT systems. Rotating through different positions allowed me to understand IT operations comprehensively, from network management to software support. This rewarding experience has solidified my commitment to a career in IT and was my favorite part of the internship.”
This internship has improved Colton’s view of the IT field. He enjoys it much more after having the opportunity to gain hands-on learning. He still plans to pursue a master’s in information systems and then have a prosperous career in information technology.
