Intern Update: Brenden O’Kane

Mechanical Maintenance Intern, Brenden O’Kane, has spent his summer working on repair and maintenance jobs with other technicians.

Brenden has helped replace valves, pumps, and filters. He has also inspected steam strainers, coolers, and other components. Brenden’s goal has been to learn how he can be a better engineer. With each project, he asks himself, “How can I make these guys work lives easier? Can I improve the functionality of this part?”

He has gained a new appreciation for all the different material properties that have been prevalent in his education so far. Brenden strives to keep improving, and he keeps the mindset that there is always something to be learned or improved upon. He says, “I have learned a lot from the technicians here. All these jobs and the guys I work with have taught me just how important it is to consider all the stakeholders in my design process.”

Brenden has greatly enjoyed his internship. He says, “When I signed on, I envisioned turning wrenches, getting oil stains on my clothes, and getting to know some good folks. This internship has been just that, and I couldn’t have asked for anything more from this experience.”

This internship has solidified Brenden’s thoughts of his field. He will continue to study aerospace engineering and possibly go into the power generation industry. Brenden plans to finish his undergraduate degree and get into a career; he trusts he will find the right industry.
