Since 1996, June has been recognized as National Safety Month, a nationwide observance established by the National Safety Council (NSC). This year marks the campaign’s 30th anniversary. National Safety Month raises awareness about preventing injuries and fatalities in the workplace, on the road, and at home, while promoting a culture of safety in every aspect of daily life. NSM offers free resources through their website to help prevent injuries and save lives.
At Prairie State, safety is more than a priority, it is a core value that guides every decision we make and every task we perform. Operating a facility of this scale requires teamwork, accountability, and a strong commitment to proactive safety measures that protect our employees, visitors, and surrounding communities. These safeguards help ensure that every task is completed safely, responsibly, and efficiently.
National Safety Month serves as an important reminder that maintaining a safe workplace requires everyone’s participation. Whether performing routine maintenance, operating equipment, conducting inspections, or supporting operations, each employee plays a critical role in preventing incidents and supporting operational excellence. By remaining vigilant, following established procedures, using appropriate personal protective equipment, and looking out for one another, we reinforce our commitment to safety every day.
Throughout June, the National Safety Council highlights a different safety focus each week:
Week 1: Moving Safety Forward
Building proactive safety cultures and identifying workplace hazards before incidents occur.
Week 2: Staying Safe on the Roads
Promoting safe driving practices and reducing preventable vehicle accidents.
Week 3: Promoting Holistic Worker Health
Supporting mental, physical, and emotional well-being as essential components of workplace safety.
Week 4: Preventing Slips, Trips, and Falls
Addressing one of the most common causes of workplace injuries through awareness and prevention strategies.
At Prairie State, our people are our greatest asset. Protecting their health, safety, and well-being is essential to our success and to the reliable operation of our energy campus. During National Safety Month, and throughout the year, we encourage all employees to make safe choices both on and off work. Together, we can ensure that safety remains our number one priority in everything we do.
