Meet the Intern: Molly Doerflein

Prairie State is pleased to welcome Molly Doerflein as the Mechanical Engineering Intern this summer!

Molly studies mechanical engineering at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC). Her interests in this field were inspired by her father. “I have always liked math, and I originally was going to go into accounting. My dad talked to me about engineering and the more I have been in this field, the more interested I’ve gotten, especially with the energy aspect.”

Molly is part of the SIU Barbell Club and SAE Saluki Baja team for engineering. In her free time, she likes to read and does powerlifting. Her past work experience includes the concession stand at her local pool and two years of working at Subway, and she is currently a waitress at Alongi’s during the school year. She has past internship experience with Continental as a mechanical engineer.

When asked what she hopes to learn from the internship, she explains, “It will give me a better understanding of how influential school is, but also allow me to be more hands on in understanding what mechanical engineering really is. Very often it is said that you will graduate with a degree but still know nothing about the field essentially.”

Molly will return in the fall to Carbondale to earn her degree in mechanical engineering. After graduation in December, she hopes to find a job in this career field.
