Intern Update: Caitlin Kyseth

Mine Engineering Intern, Caitlin Kyseth, has spent her summer learning about different areas of mining and working on roof bolter bit time studies.

The goal of these studies is to determine which bit would be best for operational use. To do this, Caitlin and the other intern have collected data on how many bolts are used in a cut, how long it takes to bolt, and why the bit needs to be replaced. Data collection should be completed soon, and she will then finalize and summarize their findings.

Caitlin has learned a lot in her time here, including the importance of surveying and how various machines work. She has also learned of the importance of ventilation and keeping return air and intake air separate. She says, “My time at Prairie State has been very enjoyable. My favorite part so far is either driving the mantrip on the surface or watching the roof bolters, since I think the bolter they use is pretty cool. I also think that the mine rescue team is interesting.”

Starting this internship, Caitlin was set on majoring in mining engineering. After some time here, she is even more confident that this is the career path for her. Her excitement about the mining industry has only grown, and she plans to continue her education in the field at Montana Tech.
