The pre-employment test you take when applying to a power plant position at Prairie State depends largely on where you would like to work. On this page, you’ll find more information about what these tests require.

Plant Operator Selection System (POSS)
POSS is a set of test batteries that were developed and validated to aid in selecting power plant operators. POSS can be used to select candidates for operating jobs in fossil, nuclear, or hydro power plants. The test takes about two hours to administer.
Positions requiring a recommendation on the POSS test:
- Plant Operator
- Control Room Operator
Power Plant Maintenance Positions Selection System (MASS)
MASS is a set of test batteries that can be used to select candidates for power plant maintenance positions in fossil, nuclear, and hydro plants. The total time to administer the MASS battery is approximately two hours.
Positions requiring a recommendation on the MASS test:
- Fuels and Materials Technician/Heavy Equipment Operator
- Mechanical Maintenance Technician
The POSS and MASS are administered as a combination test session and the entire session lasts about two hours.
Technician Occupations Selection System (TECH)
TECH is a battery of aptitude tests designed and validated to aid in the selection of candidates for electric utility industry technical occupations. These are positions for which an associate degree is normally required. The total time to administer the TECH battery is approximately two hours.
Positions requiring a recommendation on the TECH test:
- Electrical Maintenance
- Instruments and Controls
- Chemical/Water Treatment Technician
