Intern Update: Tyler Schulein

Accounting/Finance Intern, Tyler Schulein, has been immersed in a wide range of responsibilities that support the department’s day-to-day operations and long-term financial planning this summer.

Tyler has contributed to a variety of key financial functions, including footing the monthly financial statement package, updating fixed costs, posting recurring journal entries, reconciling accounts, and auditing capital slide decks. He has actively participated in finance staff meetings and supported additional projects as needed.

He also conducted an internal audit of the delegation of authority register against Maximo and analyzed various plant renovation and modernization projects. As part of his hands-on experience, Tyler traveled to the mine and plant warehouses to audit stored inventory and complete an audit of above-ground mine capital equipment.

His goal with the internship was to gain a better understanding of the managerial side of accounting, and he feels he’s achieved that by shadowing professionals to see multiple sides of the department. “It’s been eye opening to see how much goes on to keep everything operational. Finance and accounting are complex systems with many moving parts,” he shares.

As his internship continues, Tyler has gained valuable insights that will shape his future career. “I have learned to make the most of every opportunity, and not to focus on the surface. I try to ask questions and understand how everything works, not just do what I’m told to do.” He still plans to pursue a career in public accounting.
