Information Technology Intern, Rowen Brunner, has developed a deeper understanding of the IT field and the important role it plays across the Prairie State Energy Campus.
Throughout the summer, Rowen worked alongside the Helpdesk team, assisting employees at the corporate, plant, and mine locations with technical issues and supporting day-to-day IT operations. For his main project this summer, he partnered with his fellow IT intern to image and set up more than 40 desktop computers and 30 laptops across the campus.
One of the most valuable experiences Rowen gained during his internship was learning about fiber within the IT department. He observed and assisted with fiber splicing, extending fiber connections to new locations, and troubleshooting network connectivity issues throughout the plant. Following cable connections and identifying why network ports were not functioning properly gave him greater appreciation for the complexity of the work. “Learning how to splice fiber and trace connections throughout the plant was really interesting,” Rowen said. “That was a skill I was not expecting to gain this summer, but am grateful I did.”
One of Rowen’s biggest takeaways from the summer was realizing just how involved the IT profession truly is. “IT is underestimated because it’s a lot more involved than I originally thought,” he shared. “There is always a problem with electronics somewhere, and it’s our job to be ready whenever we’re needed to figure out the solution.” Through his experience, Rowen developed a new appreciation for the professionals who keep technology running behind the scenes. “I found a new respect for the people who do this job. I enjoy problem-solving, and I like the fact that every day is different and gives me the opportunity to work with all the people here.”
Looking back on the summer, Rowen feels he has accomplished the goals he set for himself at the beginning of the internship. “I’ve had a great experience, and it has been more than I could have asked for,” he said. “I’m learning a lot, seeing this career firsthand, and getting a better understanding of what working in IT is really like. I’m excited to see where this field takes me.”
One of Rowen’s favorite parts of the internship was exploring the Prairie State campus while responding to helpdesk calls and assisting employees. “There are computers in every corner of the plant, so I’ve had the opportunity to see so many different areas,” he said. “This experience has been a great stepping stone; without it, I wouldn’t really know what to expect after graduation. It’s valuable time that I really appreciate.”
When reflecting on his summer at Prairie State, Rowen says the people made the biggest impact on his experience. “The people are definitely my biggest takeaway,” he said. “I’ve met so many great people who were always willing to answer my questions and help me learn. This experience has been so valuable because of everyone I’ve worked with, and I’m grateful for everything they’ve taught me.”
Rowen will return this fall to the University of Missouri to continue pursuing his degree in computer engineering with a minor in computer science.
