Communications Intern, Madisyn Wienstroer, has had the opportunity to expand her skills while contributing to a variety of communications projects across the company.
Throughout the summer, Madisyn interviewed fellow interns, created graphics, and wrote “Meet the Intern” and “Intern Update” articles highlighting their experiences. She also created several graphics for ongoing programs throughout campus and social media platforms, wrote articles for the company newsletter, edited promotional videos, and developed company branding templates. In addition, she assisted her supervisor in preparation for company events, including the Employee Golf Outing and Scholarship Banquet, attended HR staff meetings, and helped with setting up tours of the plant and mine.
One of the most valuable skills Madisyn has developed during her internship was her creativity. Working on a wide range of projects challenged her to think strategically while creating engaging content for different projects. She also strengthened her organizational skills by managing multiple assignments and balancing a variety of projects throughout the summer.
One of the most insightful aspects of the internship for her has been learning about the role communications play within a power generation company. Madisyn gained a new appreciation for the planning, collaboration, and strategy involved in supporting internal communications at PSGC. Seeing how communication connects with every department provides a broader understanding of the profession and the many opportunities available within the field.
At the beginning of the summer, Madisyn’s goals were to become more proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud, continue growing creatively, and improve her leadership abilities. She feels she has made significant progress toward those goals and has gained confidence in her professional skills through each project she completed.
One of Madisyn’s favorite memories from the summer was the intern outing, where the group planted trees, spent time getting to know one another, and enjoyed activities like laser tag and go-karts. She credits much of her growth to working alongside her supervisor, Alyssa Kreger, and everyone in the department. “Their willingness to share their knowledge, answer questions, and provide guidance made the internship an incredibly rewarding experience and helped me gain confidence in pursuing a career in strategic communications.”
Looking back on her internship, Madisyn says, “I learned that every conversation, project, and experience is an opportunity to be provided with valuable lessons that I will carry with me beyond Prairie State. The internship strengthened my professional skill set, expanded my understanding of strategic communications, and made me more excited for this career field.” She is grateful to Alyssa and the entire Prairie State team for their mentorship, encouragement, and support throughout the summer.
Madisyn will return this fall to the University of Missouri to continue pursuing her degree in journalism with an emphasis in strategic communications and a minor in business.
