Intern Update: Drew Rose

Mechanical Engineering Intern, Drew Rose, continues to build on the knowledge he gained during his first weeks at Prairie State by working on projects that provide valuable hands-on experience with large-scale mechanical systems throughout the plant.

Throughout the summer, Drew has been involved in several engineering projects and day-to-day responsibilities. He has been developing PI graphics that model systems within the power plant, maintaining Excel spreadsheets that track turbine valves and their replacements, and documenting work in the field by photographing the Unit 2 fan room as new ventilation fans are installed. His supervisors have also encouraged him to spend time out in the plant observing equipment firsthand, allowing him to better visualize the systems he works with when returning to his desk to complete engineering projects.

One of the most valuable skills Drew has developed during his internship is time management. With multiple projects happening at once, he has learned how to prioritize tasks and balance completing deadlines. “I’ve learned how to multitask and determine which projects need my attention first. Managing several different responsibilities at once has really helped me strengthen my time management skills.”

One of the highlights of Drew’s internship has been the opportunity to experience the scale of Prairie State’s operations firsthand. “I’ve driven past this plant my entire life, but I never realized how massive it really is until I started working here. I got to go inside a boiler, see the turbines and all the equipment in operation, and it has been an incredible experience.”

When Drew began his internship, his goal was to gain real-world experience with large mechanical systems while expanding his engineering knowledge. He feels he is well on his way to accomplishing that goal through the variety of projects and learning opportunities he’s experienced this summer. One of Drew’s favorite parts of the internship has been the people he works with every day. “Everyone in my department has been so nice and welcoming. They’ve been willing to answer questions, teach me new things, and make this a great place to learn.”

Looking back on his internship, Drew says the relationships he has built and the knowledge he has gained will stay with him long after the summer ends. “I’ll remember the people I’ve worked with and everything they’ve taught me. This experience has given me knowledge that I’ll carry with me throughout my engineering career.”

After the summer, Drew will return to the College of the Ozarks for his final semester before graduating. Following graduation, he hopes to begin his career as a mechanical engineer.

We thank Drew for his hard work and dedication this summer and wish him continued success in the future!
